In summary, the owner of Chevrolet Cobalt was having a problem with the vehicle making a weird sound. Poor customer had no idea that she was on the verge of a total engine breakdown. So the vehicle owner began by explaining, “Hello, my Chevrolet Cobalt is making a funny noise. I think the [radiator] fan is hitting something while it’s spinning. Can you take a look? I have to drive it out of town this weekend.” The mechanic replied that “This individual came in with a fairly minor-sounding issue. Sometimes, a piece of debris or a broken fan shroud can cause a noise like that. I’ve seen it before. So if that’s what it was, it’d probably be a really cheap and easy fix. But this wasn’t the case, this time. In fact, this customer was lucky she didn’t need a new engine.” After checking the vehicle, the mechanic realized that there was no problem with the radiator fan. The mechanic decided to take a look at the engine and once the engine was started, the noise began again. It was a loud banging noise that sounds so bad, that it can make you a bit nervous. The mechanic also noticed that the Engine Oil light was on. The engine had almost NO OIL in it! The vehicle owner confessed that she had no idea what the Engine Oil light meant, so she just ignored it and continued driving for about a week. There was no oil so that meant that there was no lubrication or cushioning of the pistons, rods, and crankshaft colliding with each other in the engine. The vehicle could have actually exploded, with her inside! Or, her vehicle could have shut down in the middle of nowhere, leaving her with a tow truck bill and a new engine bill too. The mechanic had to advise her to ensure her car had a fresh supply of engine oil, a routine oil check and knowledge of their vehicle’s behavior (which they can get by reading the manual).
